Auburn NFL roundup: Malik Willis steps in for Titans

Malik Willis took over from Ryan Tannehill at quarterback for Tennessee during Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, and the second-year player might be on standby for what’s ahead for the Titans.

In Tennessee’s 24-16 loss at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, Willis took the field in the fourth quarter after a right-ankle injury forced Tannehill from the game.

Willis completed 4-of-5 passes for 74 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions and ran three times for 17 yards. He also was sacked four times.

After playing two snaps in Tennessee’s first five games this season, Willis came in with the Titans trailing 21-13 and was on the field for two possessions – a punt and a field goal after the Titans reached the Baltimore 1-yard line.

“That’s what your job is: To be ready if called upon,” Willis said, “so we didn’t come out with the dub, so it’s on me. I got to go back to the drawing board and understand what it takes. …

“We would have loved to have gotten points on that first drive that I got in there, but we didn’t. We end up getting three on the last drive, which we wanted more points than that, so just got to go and execute when you’re called upon.”

Tannehill left after throwing an interception with Tennessee at the Baltimore 48-yard line with 4:27 left in the third quarter and the Titans trailing 18-13.

“I was trying to gut it out,” Tannehill said. “I couldn’t put any force into the throws. … I was trying to walk it off. It was just getting worse and worse, and I wasn’t going to be able to make the throws. That’s what happened on the pick. (Tight end) Chig (Okonkwo)’s open. I just had no push into it and left it short, so at that point I just figured I’m going to be a sitting duck back there, and if I can’t even step into a throw, I’m not going to be effective.”

After the game, Titans coach Mike Vrabel didn’t know how long Tannehill might be out. Tennessee is heading into its bye week and does not play again until Oct. 29 against the Atlanta Falcons.

“Still evaluating him,” Vrabel said. “He wasn’t able to finish. We’ve been through this before. Nothing good comes when your quarterback gets hit.”

The Titans also have second-round draft pick Will Levis on their roster, but the rookie quarterback has not played this season.

“I would consider anything that could help us win right now,” Vrabel said after Tennessee dropped to 2-4 on the season. “That’s quarterback – everything. …

“Let’s find out what’s going on with Ryan.”
