Auburn NFL roundup: First interception saves Dolphins

Miami Dolphins quarterback Noah Igbinoghene picked a good time for his first NFL interception — 18 seconds remaining in a 16-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night.

The Steelers had the football second-and-2 at the Miami 25-yard line when Igbinoghene picked off Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett at the goal line for a touchback, deftly getting both feet down inbounds to seal a victory that broke a three-game losing streak for Miami.

The Steelers had moved 62 yards in 10 plays in 1:06 to threaten Miami’s six-point lead before Igbinoghene thwarted the threat.

With the Dolphins dealing with an injury outbreak in their secondary, Igbinoghene made his first start of the 2022 season on Sunday night. In addition to his interception, the former Hewitt-Trussville standout made four tackles in the game to equal his career high.

Igbinoghene joined Miami as a first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. He played in every game and made two starts as a rookie. But last season, he appeared in seven games with one start, and in 2022, he didn’t play anything other than special teams until the fifth game of the season.

“It’s a big deal,” Miami coach Mike McDaniel said. “It just goes to show and it’s a great example for the entire team. This is a guy, because of certain matchups that we had going on at the beginning of the year, he didn’t start the year dressing, and you can go one of two ways with that. You can either let it define you and rattle you or you can not even blink and worry about the opportunities that you do get.

“I think that’s one of my favorite examples of this season because he does his best to ignore the noise, but nobody’s oblivious, and he really, really wants to do big things in this league and he’s only 22 or 23 years old. He’s super-young. I think the whole team, just in the locker room, was really excited for him because they know how hard he’s worked to get on the field, to contribute, and then to do it at the end of the game, that’s a big moment that will always be one of the bigger ones in your NFL career because it’s his first game-ender.”

Igbinoghene was among the 20 former Auburn players who got on the field on the seventh Sunday of the NFL’s 103rd season.

Two other former Auburn players were involved in the Pittsburgh-Miami game:

· Steelers defensive tackle Montravius Adams made two tackles.

· Dolphins defensive end Big Kat Bryant is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

In the other Sunday games:

Baltimore Ravens 23, Cleveland Browns 20

· Josh Bynes started at middle linebacker for the Ravens. Bynes made four tackles on the day that Baltimore celebrated the 10th anniversary of its 2012 Super Bowl-winning team. Bynes and kicker Justin Tucker are the only players remaining on the Ravens who played in the 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.

· Browns wide receiver Anthony Schwartz was designated as a game-day inactive.

Carolina Panthers 21, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3

· Buccaneers inside linebacker K.J. Britt (Oxford) played but did not record any stats.

· Derrick Brown started at defensive tackle for the Panthers. Brown made four tackles and registered a quarterback hit.

· Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis was designated as a game-day inactive. A hip injury kept Davis off the field.

· Jamel Dean started at cornerback for the Buccaneers. Dean made two tackles.

· Panthers linebacker Chandler Wooten was designated as a game-day inactive. Carolina signed Wooten off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad on Monday.

Cincinnati Bengals 35, Atlanta Falcons 17

· Falcons defensive lineman Marlon Davidson (Greenville) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

New York Giants 23, Jacksonville Jaguars 17

· Darius Slayton started at wide receiver for the Giants. Slayton caught three passes for 58 yards and one touchdown. Slayton’s first score of the 2022 season came on a 32-yard throw by quarterback Daniel Jones with 10:21 left in the first quarter for the game’s first points. Slayton had started New York’s opening possession with a 12-yard reception, and he ended it with the Giants’ biggest gainer of the game.

· Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery) played but did not record any stats.

· Jaguars wide receiver Seth Williams (Paul Bryant) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Tennessee Titans 19, Indianapolis Colts 10

· Colts defensive tackle Byron Cowart made one tackle.

· Roger McCreary (Williamson) started at cornerback for the Titans. McCreary made five tackles and broke up a pass.

· Braden Smith started at right offensive tackle for the Colts.

· Titans quarterback Malik Willis entered the game when Tennessee starting QB Ryan Tannehill appeared to suffer an ankle injury on the first play of the fourth quarter. Medical personnel attended to Tannehill on the field, and he eventually limped to the sideline medical tent. Willis handed off to Dontrell Hilliard on the next snap, then the Tennessee field-goal unit came in for a three-pointer that gave the Titans a 16-7 lead with 13:47 left to play. That was Willis’ only action as Tannehill returned for the next Titans’ possession and finished the game. But after the game, Tannehill was wearing a walking boot and said: “It doesn’t feel great. I had to battle through it there at the end. Sometimes it comes with the territory. I’m going to be out there if I can at all possible, so I’m going to do everything I can this week to get it right and get it feeling best I can for Sunday.” A third-round draft choice from Liberty on April 29, Willis had made his NFL debut in Tennessee’s season-opener, when he completed 1-of-4 passes for 6 yards and ran four times for 16 yards mopping up in the Titans’ 41-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 19. He had not played since.

Washington Commanders 23, Green Bay Packers 21

· Packers safety Rudy Ford (New Hope) made four tackles on defense and one tackle on special teams.

New York Jets 16, Denver Broncos 9

· Carl Lawson started at defensive end for the Jets. Lawson shared a sack.

· Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood played but did not record any stats.

· C.J. Uzomah started at tight end for the Jets. Uzomah had a 5-yard reception.

Las Vegas Raiders 38, Houston Texans 20

· Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson made a 50-yard field goal to start the scoring, then kicked five extra points.

· Raiders quarterback Jarrett Stidham played in a regular-season game for the first time since Dec. 28, 2020. Las Vegas starting quarterback Derek Carr took a big hit on a completion on the fourth snap of the game and did not immediately get up. Medical personnel attended to Carr on the field, checking one of his knees. Carr came out, Stidham handed off to running back Josh Jacobs, and Carr returned to the game.

Seattle Seahawks 37, Los Angeles Chargers 23

· Chargers long snapper Josh Harris handled the snaps for five punts and three extra points.

Kansas City Chiefs 44, San Francisco 49ers 23

· Chiefs offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho (Edgewood Academy) played but did not record any stats.

Week 7 started on Thursday night, when the Arizona Cardinals defeated the New Orleans Saints 42-34.

Week 7 concludes on Monday, when the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots square off at 7:15 p.m. CDT at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes will televise the game.
