Auburn NFL roundup: Derrick Brown good for bad team
After losing to the New Orleans Saints 28-6 on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers have a 1-12 record and are the only team in the NFL without at least three victories in the 2023 season.
But that doesn’t mean the team uniformly stinks.
The Panthers held the Saints to 207 yards. New Orleans scored one of its touchdowns by getting to the football faster than Carolina punter Johnny Hekker could get his foot on the ball, and New Orleans’ final TD came on a 24-yard “drive.”
Meanwhile, Carolina lost two fumbles, missed a 41-yard field goal and got stopped on downs five times.
Defensive lineman Derrick Brown anchored the Panthers’ defensive effort. Brown led Carolina with 10 tackles, registered one quarterback hit and intercepted one pass.
Brown knocked into the air a pass by New Orleans quarterback Derek Carr, then caught the football and had a 2-yard return to the Saints 45-yard line with 18 seconds left in the first half.
The interception was the second of Brown’s career, and both came against New Orleans. In the Panthers’ 22-14 victory over the Saints on Sept. 25, 2022, Brown caught a pass by New Orleans quarterback Jameis Winston that had been tipped by a teammate.
Brown recorded the third game of his career with double-digit tackles and his second this season on Sunday. Brown is the only NFL defensive lineman with two games with at least 10 tackles in 2023.
Brown was among the 11 former Auburn players who got on the field on the 14th Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.
Two other former Auburn players were involved in the Carolina-New Orleans game:
