Auburn linebacker Powell Gordon enters transfer portal, per reports

Another reserve Auburn linebacker is on the move this offseason.

Powell Gordon, a redshirt freshman out of Auburn High, has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. Gordon’s decision to explore the portal was first reported by 247Sports. Powell is the third linebacker to depart the program since the start of spring, joining fellow reserves Kameron Brown (who has since committed to UT-Chattanooga) and Desmond Tisdol.

In all, Powell is the fifth player to hit the portal this spring. Defensive end Jeffrey M’ba announced his decision to transfer last week, while wide receiver Tar’Varish Dawson Jr. entered the portal Saturday when the post-spring window opened.

Powell is a former local three-star prospect who signed with Auburn as part of its 2022 class and was one of the first commitments of the class under then-coach Bryan Harsin. A 6-foot-2, 222-pounder who was rated as a three-star prospect coming out of high school, Gordon did not see the field during his first season with the Tigers, redshirting last fall.

While he showed some intrigue as a pass-rusher — an area of need for Auburn heading into this season — and excelled in that role in high school, Gordon was more of a developmental player for the new staff. He did not appear to be in line for snaps in the Tigers’ rotation at linebacker, where Cam Riley, Austin Keys, Wesley Steiner, Robert Woodyard Jr., DeMario Tolan and Eugene Asante were all ahead of him during spring practices.

“Powell’s just always going to be a developmental guy, for now, from the standpoint of he was strictly an edge guy in high school,” Auburn linebackers coach Josh Aldridge said last month. “And he doesn’t quite have the length to be that at this level, you know? The phrase in coaching usually is you never want to move people back, right? You don’t sign a high school linebacker to make him a safety. You don’t sign a high school D-end to make him a linebacker.

“And that’s not to say that Powell won’t play linebacker for us, but that’s why the transition will take a little longer, you know what I mean? Just because of the amount of reps — and I have no idea the amount of reps he was getting years before this, but it’s going to take some. But he’s got a great attitude. Works crazy hard. Plays with a really high motor. Awesome kid, awesome kid.”
