Auburn hoops forward nominated for Julius Erving Award

As the end of the season approaches, accolades are starting to roll in for No. 1 Auburn men’s basketball.

Starting wing and second-leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara was named a finalist for the Julius Erving Award Wednesday, given to the country’s best small forward.

He earned the distinction alongside Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Rutgers’ Ace Bailey, Kentucky’s Jaxson Robinson and St. John’s forward RJ Luis Jr.

Baker-Mazara has been one of Auburn’s standouts this season, averaging 13.1 points per game and shooting 39.3% from 3-point range. He’s averaging 19.6 points across Auburn’s last three games, including 22 in wins over Ole Miss and Kentucky.

He’s also one of Auburn’s best defenders, leading the team in steal percentage, according to KenPom.

The Julius Erving Award is presented by the National Basketball Hall of Fame and will be determined by a selection committee composed of media members, head coaches, sports information directors and members of the National Basketball Hall of Fame.

Fans can also vote on the award, and the fan vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process. Fan voting will start March 7, on hoophallawards.com.

The date for when the Julius Erving Award winner will be announced is to be determined, according to a release from the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
