Auburn High School senior dies after being shot 19 days before graduation
An Auburn High School senior died after he was shot in a CVS parking lot early Saturday morning, just 19 days before graduation, police said.
Delvin Tarver, 18, was in a SUV when he was struck by gunfire in the parking lot of the CVS on Baskin Street in Union Springs around 12:43 a.m. Saturday, where Bullock County High School prom attendees were congregating just a mile away from the school’s prom, said Union Springs police Lt. Gary Lewis.
Lewis said Tarver did not attend the Bullock County High School prom.
Tarver was taken to Baptist South Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Auburn High School is holding graduation ceremonies on May 23. It was not immediately clear whether the school will honor Tarver at the commencement.
Police do not have a motive for the shooting and no suspects were in custody as of late Monday afternoon, said Lewis.
Auburn High School and Auburn City Schools could not be reached by AL.com for comment, but a district spokesperson told WRBL that Tarver was a “cherished member” of the school.
“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the untimely passing of a cherished member of our Auburn High School community,” the spokesperson told the station. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family and friends during this difficult time.
Lewis urged anyone with information on the shooting to call Union Springs police at 334-738-3131.
