Auburn football: Hugh Freeze gives full injury update after injury-ridden game at Texas A&M

There was a stretch of Saturday’s game at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field in which it felt like an Auburn player was getting helped off the field every other play.

It wasn’t at all what head coach Hugh Freeze and Auburn fans wanted to see considering the team was already lacking in the depth department after losing guys like linebacker Austin Keys and defensive back Keionte Scott for a considerable period of time.

Perhaps the most notable injury from Saturday came when sophomore running back Damari Alston took a helmet to his right arm, sending him to the on-field injury tent and then to the locker room. The next time Alston appeared on the sideline, he was in an arm sling.

“Damari will be out for a period of time for sure,” Freeze said during his press conference Monday. “I think they’re doing some more tests today on that, but he had a dislocated shoulder for sure. It’s just a matter of, you know, sometimes those things can heal on their own in time. Sometimes they require more work. And we really don’t know.”

Auburn safety Donovan Kaufman was another player that got banged up against the Aggies Saturday, receiving some attention to his ankle before returning to the field in the lesser role.

Kaufman’s injury on Saturday game after he missed two weeks due to a concussion.

“Kaufman tried but just kept being gimpy with the ankle,” Freeze said Monday. “We’ll just have to see how he is day-to-day for sure.”

Rounding out the injury report was veteran safety Zion Puckett, who exited Saturday’s game with a shoulder injury.

“That really hurt us,” Freeze said. “He was doing a good job of keeping us on the same page back there in our coverages and that really cost us two touchdowns when we had to move (Caleb) Wooden to go to the nickel position because JD Rhym couldn’t play. And we’re already without Keionte (Scott) and Kaufman, so that really took a toll on us and hurt us there.

“All of those guys will be day-to-day,” Freeze added. “I don’t think it’s anything that’s doing to keep them out for a significant amount of time, but day-to-day.”
