Auburn DBs coach Zac Etheridge resigns, reportedly headed to Houston

Auburn defensive backs coach and former player Zac Etheridge has resigned from his position, according to a social media post and quickly confirmed in a press release from Auburn.

According to a report from 247Sports, Etheridge will head to Houston, where he previously coached in 2019 and 2020.

The 247Sports report noted Etheridge was a finalist for the Lousiana-Monroe head coaching job. Bryant Vincent, the former offensive coordinator at New Mexico, was hired instead.

Etheridge played at Auburn from 2007-2010 and was a team captain on Auburn’s 2010 national championship team. He came back to Auburn as the safeties coach in 2021.

He stayed on the staff through the turnover from previous head coach Bryan Harsin to Freeze. But after only one year under Freeze, Etheridge will not be back in 2024.

Auburn’s staff has continued to turnover during this offseason. Both of Auburn’s coordinators have left including the announced firing of former offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery and the reported departure of defensive coordinator Ron Roberts to Florida.

Running backs coach and former interim head coach Cadillac Williams resigned Thursday night.

With both Williams and Etheridge out, no coaches remain from former head coach Bryan Harsin’s staff.

Auburn’s secondary will lose four key starters to the NFL in safeties Jaylin Simpson and Zion Puckett as well as cornerbacks Nehemiah Pritchett and DJ James. Cornerback Keionte Scott, who was set to anchor Auburn’s secondary next season, was initially reported to put his name in the transfer portal, but ultimately removed himself and will return to Auburn.

Scott’s return is maybe the only piece of stability in Auburn’s secondary heading into 2024. It will be a highly young and inexperienced back of the defense for Auburn. It’s unclear who will coach them.

Auburn reportedly has brought in former Colorado defensive coordinator Charles Kelly. News of his expected hire broke just ahead of Auburn’s appearance in the Music City Bowl. Auburn is still yet to announce his hire. Kelly played at Auburn as a defensive back and the bulk of his coaching experience is with that position group. He could be a natural fit to take over one of the open position coach spots.
