Auburn commit and Benjamin Russell senior Malcolm Simmons turned a busted play into a game-winning touchdown.

Simmons made a one-handed catch, as quarterback Gabe Benton scrambled away from the rush before finding Simmons in the end zone with 2:39 remaining, and the Wildcats intercepted a pass in the end zone on the game’s final play to earn a 25-21 victory over Briarwood Christian at Lions Pride Stadium in Birmingham.

Simmons finished with 10 catches for 212 yards and two touchdowns, as the Wildcats rallied from deficits of 14-0 and 21-6. Benton finished 24-of-30 passing for 342 yards and three touchdowns.

Briarwood’s Josh Thompson ran 14 times for 136 yards and completed 10-of-20 passes for 62 yards. Luke Reynolds ran 13 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

Benjamin Russell overcame 11 penalties for 130 yards.

For Benjamin Russell, (6-2 overall, 4-1 in Class 6A, Region 3), the victory clinches a playoff spot and keeps the Wildcats in contention for the No. 2 seed a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Benjamin Russell plays region leader Helena next week at home, and Briarwood (4-4, 3-2) plays Homewood at home. If Ben Russell and Briarwood win, the Wildcats will earn the No. 2 seed.
