Auburn basketball’s Johni Broome named SEC Player of the Year
End of season recognition is starting to roll in for Auburn’s star forward.
Johni Broome was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year on Monday, helping lead Auburn to a regular season conference title. The award was voted on by the conference’s head coaches.
Broome averaged 18.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.4 blocks over the course of the campaign, leading Auburn in each category. That includes a career high 34 points in Auburn’s regular season finale, a 93-91 overtime loss to Alabama.
“I thought Johni Broome demonstrated to the country why he’s the National Player of the Year — or should be, in my opinion,” head coach Bruce Pearl said after the Alabama loss. “As I explained to Johni after the game, that’s what I expect from him.”
The honor makes Broome the third player in Auburn men’s basketball history to be named SEC Player of the Year, joining Charles Barkley in 1984 and Chris Porter in 1999.
Broome was also named to the All-SEC First Team for the second season in a row, the only Auburn player on the first team this season. He’s also a strong candidate for National Player of the Year, seemingly in a two-man race with Duke star freshman Cooper Flagg.
