Auburn basketball to meet with Ohio State for Holiday Hoopsgiving in Atlanta

For the fifth year in a row, Auburn’s men’s basketball team will be taking to Atlanta’s State Farm Arena in early December to participate in the Holiday Hoopsgiving tournament, where the Tigers are set to see the Ohio State Buckeyes on Dec. 14.

Auburn announced the matchup in a press release on Monday.

Auburn and Ohio State’s men’s basketball teams have met on the hardwood just once before in a NCAA Tournament South Regional semifinal in 1999.

The Buckeyes went on to beat the Tigers 72-64 from the University of Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling Arena as Ohio State point guard Scoonie Penn exploded for 26 points.

Meanwhile, Auburn’s Chris Porter and Doc Robinson combined for 25 points.

When the two programs meet later this year, Auburn will be coming off a 2023-24 season that saw it finish with a 27-8 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

On the other sideline, Ohio State is coming off a campaign that saw it finish with a 22-14 record and an appearance in the NIT.

During their appearance in the 2024 Holiday Hoopsgiving Tournament, Bruce Pearl and the Tigers will be looking for their second consecutive win in the tournament after beating Indiana 104-76 last season.

“Playing every year in Atlanta in the premiere college basketball event has been an important part of the development of this program,” Pearl said in the release. “We were the first and have been the only SEC school to play every year in this important event for college basketball in Atlanta – home to some of the best high school basketball in America. In the last six years, we have had six players from Georgia (Isaac Okoro, Chuma Okeke, JT Thor, Sharife Cooper, Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler) drafted into the NBA.”

With the addition of Ohio State, Auburn’s current non-conference slate for the 2024-25 season is made up of:

  • A Nov. 9 matchup at Toyota Center vs. Houston
  • A trio of games during the Maui Invitational
  • A Dec. 4 matchup at Duke for the ACC/SEC Challenge
  • A Dec. 14 matchup vs. Ohio State at Atlanta’s Holiday Hoopsgiving
  • A Dec. 21 matchup with Purdue at Birmingham’s Legacy Arena
