Auburn basketball sweeps SEC Player of the Week, Freshman of the Week awards
After a slew of Auburn players had big days in a 104-76 win against Indiana, the Tigers swept the SEC Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards announced Monday.
Forward Jaylin Williams was named the SEC Player of the Week after scoring 24 points along with seven assists, six rebounds and a block against Indiana. It was his fifth career 20-point game.
Williams was Auburn’s most productive post player on both ends, picking up offensively on an afternoon where leading scorer Johni Broome didn’t have a big day against Indiana center Kel’el Ware.
But Williams’ role was equally large defensively. He had the assignment of guarding Ware, and essentially eliminated Ware’s impact from the game. The 7-footer made only two field goals in the game.
Point guard Aden Holloway was picked as the SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring a career-high 24 points and broke out of his two-game slump in a big way.
Holloway has been adjusting to finding new ways to get open shots after defenses have put more pressure on him, now having the collegiate film to scout against. After the Indiana win, Holloway mentioned Auburn freeing him off screens for open and in-rhythm shots.
Auburn will play its next game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against UNC Asheville in Huntsville, Alabama. It will then host USC at noon Sunday at Neville Arena.
