Auburn basketball signs high-scoring FIU transfer Denver Jones
A little more than 24 hours after his commitment, FIU transfer Denver Jones has signed with Auburn for the 2023-24 season.
Jones, a native of New Market, committed to Auburn on Saturday afternoon during a visit to the Plains. The 6-foot-4 guard put pen to paper Sunday and made his transfer official with his letter of intent, the program announced.

Jones averaged 20.1 points per game last season at Florida International and was one of just 26 players in college basketball who averaged at least 20 points per game. He’s rated as the No. 26 overall player in the transfer portal this offseason, according to 247Sports.
In two years at FIU, Jones appeared in 59 games with 35 starts, including seven during the 2021-22 season before stepping into a full-time starting role this past season. He shot 43.4 percent from the field last season, including 35.7 percent from 3-point range an 86.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Not only was Jones a prolific scorer and proficient from beyond the arc but he was fifth nationally in mid-range field goal percentage during the 2022-23 season, when he earned first-team All-Conference USA honors.
His two seasons at FIU were preceded by one year at Garden City Community College in Kansas, where he averaged 19.1 points per game and shot 40 percent from distance in his lone season at the JUCO level.
Jones will have two years of eligibility remaining at Auburn, where he is currently set to be one of two newcomers to the roster for next season, joining incoming freshman and McDonald’s All-America point guard Aden Holloway. While they are, so far, the only two additions for Auburn this offseason, they will not be the last as Bruce Pearl aims to retool the Tigers’ roster.
Auburn still has four open scholarship spots remaining for the upcoming season and is still waiting on decisions from seniors Allen Flanigan and Jaylin Williams, both of whom have an extra year of eligibility available should they choose to use it. Auburn has already seen five players exit the program since the season ended with a second-round NCAA Tournament loss in Birmingham last month. Starting two-guard Zep Jasper exhausted his eligibility, while starting point guard Wendell Green Jr. declared for the NBA Draft. Freshmen Yohan Traore and Chance Westry entered the transfer portal, and senior reserve Stretch Akingbola announced his plans to enter the portal as a grad transfer this summer after completing his undergraduate degree at Auburn this summer.
