Auburn basketball ranked No. 1 in AP Poll for first time since 2022

Auburn men’s basketball is back on top of the college basketball world, at least in the minds of the AP voters.

The Tigers were ranked No. 1 in Monday’s Week 11 poll, the first time the program has held the top spot since Feb. 7, 2022. It’s the fourth week in program history Auburn has been No. 1, landing atop the AP rankings for three weeks in 2022.

That team featured the likes of future first round NBA draft picks Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler and finished the season 28-6, exiting the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 32.

The jump in the rankings comes after Auburn beat Texas and South Carolina last week and previous No. 1, Tennessee suffered a 30-point loss to Florida. The Volunteers dropped to No. 6 and will face Auburn on Jan. 25.

Nine Southeastern Conference teams are ranked in this week’s rankings, with five landing in the top 10. Those teams include Auburn (1), Alabama (4), Florida (5), Tennessee (6), Kentucky (8), Texas A&M (11), Mississippi State (15), Ole Miss (21) and Georgia (23).

Auburn will face two of those teams this week, facing Mississippi State on Tuesday and Georgia on Saturday. The task of keeping the No. 1 spot is only made more difficult by an injury to All-American center Johni Broome.

Broome suffered a sprained left ankle during Auburn’s win over South Carolina on Saturday and didn’t put any weight on his left foot when leaving the floor. The school announced on Sunday that the injury won’t require surgery, but did not offer a timetable for Broome’s return.

Auburn’s matchup with Mississippi State is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and will be streaming live on SEC Network.
