Auburn basketball forward nominated for Karl Malone Award

With one game left in the regular season, Auburn basketball has another player in the running for a postseason award.

Leading scorer Johni Broome was named a finalist for the Karl Malone Award Thursday, given to the country’s best power forward.

The other finalist consists of Michigan’s Danny Wolf, Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg and Villanova’s Eric Dixon.

The Auburn All-American has put together an historic season leading the Tigers in almost every statistical category. His 18.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.4 blocks per game also has him in the running for National Player of the Year.

Broome is shooting a team-high 50.4% from the floor this season. On Tuesday, he became the fourth player in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history to score 2,500 career points and 1,500 career rebounds.

The Karl Malone Award is presented by the National Basketball Hall of Fame and will be determined by a selection committee composed of media members, head coaches, sports information directors and members of the National Basketball Hall of Fame.

Fans can also vote on the award, and the fan vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process. Fan voting will start March 7, on hoophallawards.com.

The date for when the Karl Malone Award winner will be announced is to be determined.
