Auburn basketball clinches share of SEC title after beating Kentucky
For the sixth time in school history and third time under head coach Bruce Pearl, Auburn men’s basketball has clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference regular season championship.
The Tigers did so with a win over Kentucky Saturday afternoon, beating the Wildcats 94-78 to improve to 27-2 on the season and 15-1 in SEC play.
Coming into Saturday, Auburn needed either a win or an Alabama loss to Tennessee to clinch at least a share of the title. With the win over Kentucky, an Alabama loss to Tennessee would give Auburn the outright title.
Saturday’s win over Kentucky was Auburn’s first win in Rupp Arena since 1988 and just the third in program history. The win also gives Auburn its best record in SEC play in program history at 15-1.
The Tigers’ next game is a road contest against Texas A&M Tuesday night. That game is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
