Auburn basketball: Bruce Pearl may not use Auburnâs 13th scholarship
Auburn basketball head coach Bruce Pearl is still unsure if he will fill the 13th and final open scholarship for this season.
“I doubt we’ll use that 13th scholarship,” Pearl said. “I take pride in the fact that it’s been a while since we’ve actually had 13 guys on scholarship. And part of it is it’s hard enough to keep 12 guys happy, let alone 13. It’s not just about keeping them happy. It’s about your locker room. Plus, it always gives me an opportunity to put a non-scholarship player, (give) a walk-on scholarship. But if we do (use) that last scholarship, we’ll hold it until midsemester just in case something pops up midsemester, then we would have an opportunity.”
Auburn had been playing with only 12 scholarships available before this year due to sanctions stemming from a 2017 investigation into former Auburn coach and player Chuck Person.
Though the scholarship is back, Pearl doesn’t seem imminent to hand it out. If he does use it for someone currently on the roster, graduate guard Lior Berman appears the most likely candidate.
Auburn also could hold that spot available for future recruiting classes. Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class is made up of solely 5-star guard Tahaad Pettiford by this point. And Auburn is going to have more than just that one empty scholarship looking ahead to next year’s roster.
Here’s a look at Auburn’s roster breakdown as of Tuesday, the first official day of basketball practice.
