Auburn basketball assistant coach updates Johni Broome’s status ahead of Final Four
Johni Broome provided one of the moments of the NCAA tournament Sunday when Auburn beat Michigan State in the Elite Eight.
After coming down with an injury around the midway point of the second half, Broome made an unexpected return with just over five minutes to go in the game and knocked down a 3-pointer to the crowd’s delight.
However, Broome’s return to the game and subsequent 3-pointer didn’t erase his injuries altogether. Auburn associate head coach Steven Pearl was interviewed on The Next Round Tuesday morning and outlined what this week will look like for Broome as he recovers for Saturday’s game in the Final Four.
“Johni is not going to practice today. He’s going to take today off and continue to rehab the seven different things that he injured on that one play,” Pearl said on the show. “The most important thing is just getting his legs back underneath him, continue to manage some of the things that are bummed up on him right now and as the week progresses, hopefully his status does as well.”
The injury occurred as Broome landed after contesting a shot, coming down awkwardly on his right arm and left leg. Broome is averaging 17.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game during the NCAA tournament, scoring 25 and grabbing 14 boards in Sunday’s win over Michigan State.
Saturday’s Final Four game against Florida is set to tip off at 5:09 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS.
