Auburn baseball injury report: Will Eric Guevara play against Coastal Carolina?

When you’re 59 games into a college baseball season, injuries and attrition become hard to avoid. That’s no different for Auburn going into the super regionals.

Red hot infielder Eric Guevara suffered a knee injury during Game 2 of the Auburn regional against Stetson, causing him to miss the regional championship against NC State.

Following the win over Stetson, head coach Butch Thompson said the injury required Guevara to leave the game immediately, but didn’t have an official diagnosis or timeline. Ahead of the super regional round against Coastal Carolina, Thompson gave another update on Guevara’s availability.

Thompson said Guevara is “way below” 100%, but didn’t completely rule out the infielder from contributing in some fashion.

“Could he be Kirk Gibson? He took batting practice today. He ran with Anthony, our trainer, and did some things,” Thompson said.

Thompson added that he might trust Guevara to give Auburn an at bat, and that he would likely include him on the 27-man roster to keep that a possibility. Putting Guevara back in the field is less likely, according to Thompson.

Thompson was also asked about center fielder Cade Belyeu, who has been limited with injury to one game per series in most weeks. The head coach said Belyeu won’t be at 100% for the rest of the year, but said he’s still able to play. However, there are still concerns about Belyeu playing multiple games in a row, something Thompson said he would not have been able to do last week.

Game 1 of Auburn’s home super regional against Coastal Carolina is set to start at 8 p.m. on Friday. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
