Auburn, Alabama target Micah DeBose trying to narrow options

Vigor offensive lineman Micah DeBose, the No. 4-ranked junior in the nation at his position, hopes he’s nearing an end to his recruitment.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound prospect hopes to narrow his college choices down soon, he told AL.com, though he doesn’t have a specific date in mind.

“There have been a lot of colleges coming by here daily,” the 4-star recruit said this week. “It’s been good, but the process is kind of coming to an end. It’s getting a little weary.”

DeBose decommitted from his longtime pledge to Georgia a month ago and said Tuesday he hasn’t talked to the Bulldogs staff much since then.

“So, I guess they opted out,” he said.

However, he is not without big-time suitors on the next level. Ohio State coach Ryan Day watched DeBose’s basketball game at St. Paul’s on Friday. DeBose visited Auburn over the weekend and met new Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer earlier this week.

His coach at Vigor, Markus Cook, said he is handling the attention well.

“He’s very mature. He’s like a seasoned vet,” Cook said. “He knows how to interview. He knows what to say and what not to say. He understands the process, and he’s a pretty nice guy.

“He doesn’t really turn any school down. He talks to every school if you let him. He’s very respectful. He will have to start to narrow it down. It is getting closer. He’s letting everyone make their pitches right now. I know more schools will come in the spring and then it will be official visit time in the summer.”

Here is how DeBose handicapped a few of the schools on his list right now:

Auburn: “I think Auburn is a good fit for me. I’ve been talking to coach (Hugh) Freeze and (offensive line) coach (Jake) Thornton and getting to know them more on a personal level than just as coaches.”

Alabama: “I feel like Alabama is going to be just fine. (Coach DeBoer) just talked about how I could buy into the program and become a good player at Alabama and how he could change and mold me into the player I want to be in the future in the NFL on and off the field.”

Ohio State: “I think by coach Day coming all the way down here it shows me that they really want me. I think it may be the first time coach Day has been down here ever to see a player so that shows I’m important to them.”

DeBose grew up in Cleveland before moving to Alabama when he was 8. He also said he liked “LSU a lot” and mentioned Florida State, Michigan, USC, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
