Auburn adds 2nd North Texas transfer in linebacker Larry Nixon III

Auburn is reinforcing its linebacker corps with yet another transfer — and another addition from North Texas.

Former Mean Green linebacker Larry Nixon III committed to Auburn on Tuesday, choosing the Tigers over the likes of Miami and West Virginia. Nixon, who graduated from North Texas over the weekend, will have one year of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer. He’s the second former North Texas player to transfer to Auburn, joining wide receiver Jyaire Shorter, who committed to and signed with the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon.

Nixon — rated as a three-star transfer, according to 247Sports — was the Mean Green’s second-leading tackler last season, finishing the year with 106 total tackles, including 52 solo stops and 2.5 behind the line of scrimmage. He added one sack and five quarterback hurries on the year. Nixon was tied for third in tackles among Conference USA defenders last season, behind only fellow North Texas linebacker KD Davis (139 total) and UAB linebacker Noah Wilder (109).

Just a two-star recruit out of high school, when he was rated as the No. 255 overall linebacker in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Nixon redshirted during his first season with the Mean Green while making just one appearance. His debut came in North Texas’ bowl game that season, but his role increased over the following four years.

Nixon appeared in 41 games over the last four seasons while making 24 starts at linebacker. The 6-foot-2, 236-pounder totaled 245 tackles during that span, with 11.5 for a loss and 5.5 sacks, two pass deflections and a pair of forced fumbles. Last season was his most productive campaign, as he was one of just 62 players across the country who finished with at least 100 tackles.

Nixon is now the third linebacker addition for Auburn through the transfer portal and the first since the end of spring practices. The Tigers previously added Ole Miss transfer Austin Keys and LSU transfer DeMario Tolan as Hugh Freeze, defensive coordinator Ron Roberts and linebackers coach Josh Aldridge worked to replenish numbers in the room this offseason. Auburn saw leading tackler Owen Pappoe move on to the NFL, while a trio of reserve linebackers — Kameron Brown (UT Chattanooga), Desmond Tisdol (Florida Atlantic) and Powell Gordon — departed the program this spring.

Auburn is set to have seven linebackers on scholarship for the 2023 season, with Nixon joining a group that includes Keys, Tolan, key returners Cam Riley and Wesley Steiner, as well as Eugene Asante and Robert Woodyard Jr.

In all, Nixon is the sixth post-spring transfer addition for Auburn, which has already picked up Shorter, Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne, Ohio State wide receiver Caleb Burton, Tulsa offensive lineman Jaden Muskrat and Appalachian State edge rusher Jalen McLeod. Auburn still has a handful of scholarship spots open before it reaches the NCAA limit of 85, with Freeze still hoping to add a defensive end, a cornerback and potentially another wide receiver.
