Atlanta Braves trade former Alabama high school star
The Atlanta Braves traded former Buckhorn High School star Kyle Wright to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night, the National League team announced.
A two-time All-State player at Buckhorn, where he played for his father, Roger Wright, Kyle Wright pitched three seasons at Vanderbilt before going pro as the fifth player picked in the 2017 draft. He made his big-league debut the next year.
Atlanta traded the right-handed pitcher to Kansas City for pitcher Jackson Kowar.
A 6-foot-5 right-hander, Kowar worked in 23 games out of the Royals bullpen during the 2023 season. He had a 6.43 earned-run average and 2-0 record in 28 innings. Kowar struck out 29 and yielded 34 hits and 20 walks. The former Florida standout had 418 strikeouts in 384 innings in the minor leagues.
In 2022, Wright led the Major Leagues in wins with a 21-5 record for the Braves. But in 2023, Wright made only seven starts for Atlanta because of shoulder issues.
On Oct. 9, Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters that Wright was going “to have a procedure done in order to get him right,” and he expected Wright to miss the 2024 season.
In 60 MLB games, Wright has a 24-16 record with a 4.45 ERA. In 281.1 innings, Wright has struck out 267 and yielded 266 hits and 118 walks.
