Athens police ask for help finding vehicle involved in fatal hit-and-run
Athens police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a hit-and-run that left a man dead Saturday night.
Officers were called to the area of U.S. 72 East and Old Decatur Road near Walmart at 10:15 p.m. following reports a person had been struck by a vehicle, according to an email from Athens police. First responders found the body of a man in the roadway, police Capt. Brett M. Constable said in a statement.
Police say the driver of the vehicle that struck the man drove away before emergency workers arrived.
“We are asking for the public’s help with any information regarding this crash,” Constable said.
The vehicle will have moderate to heavy damage to its front end, including the windshield, police said. Anyone with information may call Athens police dispatch at 256-233-8700.
