At least 5 overdosed, 1 fatally, at Mississippi coast motel where managers sold meth
Two mangers of a Mississippi coast motel where at least five people have overdosed — including one who died — are headed to federal prison for selling methamphetamine out of the motel.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 54-year-old Pernell Robert Galloway and 42-year-old Cassie Louise McKenzie were sentenced in U.S. District Court in Gulfport this week for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
Galloway was sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison, while McKenzie was sentenced to nine years, seven months.
Court documents indicate U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents began investigating drug activity at the Economy Inn on U.S. 90 in Bay St. Louis, Miss., in 2023. Agents were provided with information that Galloway and McKenzie, the motel managers, were selling drug.
Undercover agents subsequently made purchases of methamphetamine from the two suspects. On June 8 of last year, a search warrant was executed at the motel during which agents located methamphetamine, a firearm, digital scales and other paraphernalia.
The Sun Herald reported five people overdosed at the motel, including one resulting in death. Galloway is a convicted felon and he and McKenzie were in a relationship, according to the report.
