ASWA prep rankings: Major change in this week’s football poll
For the first time in 23 years, the Hoover football team is not ranked.
The Bucs (1-3) fell out of this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 7A poll following last week’s 26-7 loss to Vestavia Hills.
It snaps a streak of 266 consecutive polls that included Hoover. Last week, Piedmont, which held the second longest streak, dropped out of the polls in Class 3A, ending a run of 167 consecutive polls.

The current longest streak for active weeks in the poll is Class 2A Fyffe at 158 straight, according to ASWA president and prep committee chairman A. Stacy Long. The Red Devils are ranked No. 4 in Class 2A this week.
The last time Hoover was unranked before today’s poll was the final poll of 1999, the first year of the Rush Propst tenure with the Bucs. Since then, Hoover has won 286 games and 11 state titles – five under Propst and six under Josh Niblett.
In addition to last week’s loss to Vestavia, Hoover’s other losses this season came against No. 3-ranked Auburn in the season opener and Oak Grove, Miss., in overtime in Week 2.
The schedule for Wade Waldrop and company doesn’t get any easier any time soon. The Bucs play No. 6 Hewitt-Trussville on Friday and Class 6A No. 7 Mountain Brook on Sept. 29. They finish the regular season with a game against top-ranked Thompson on Oct. 27.
In Class 5A, Ramsay moved back to No. 1 after defeating Pleasant Grove last week.
