Ask us: How are streets to be repaved determined in Huntsville?

Multiple readers have asked about timelines for fixing potholes and repaving roads around Huntsville, including Sharon Street, Farriss Drive, Hilltop Terrace, Mastin Lake Road, Todd Mill Road, Leftwich Street and, in one reader’s case, Old Monrovia Road west of the roundabout. “It’s horrible,” he said.

The city of Huntsville surveys its 2,300 lane-miles of paved roads every other year and ranks the roads by condition and traffic volume to come up with a list of streets to be repaved, according to the Public Works Department. Each fiscal year, the city repaves dozens of roads in phases.

The short answer to all the roads in question is, “not this fiscal year.” None of the streets readers asked about made the list of 122 projects in two phases slated for Fiscal 2024.
