Art Briles hired to coach in new football startup league

Art Briles is a football head coach again, this time in a new spring startup league.

Briles was announced late Thursday as head coach of the Dallas Pioneros of the International Football Alliance. The IFA plans to launch in the early summer of 2024, with three teams in the United States and three in Mexico.

The 67-year-old Briles has been a football nomad since he was fired by Baylor in 2015 after being accused of ignoring or covering up sexual assault accusations against members of his team. He coached the Guelfi Firenze of the Italian Football League in 2018 and 2022, and spent two seasons (2019-2020) as head coach at Mount Vernon (Texas) High School.

Briles has been hired for two other jobs in North America since leaving Baylor, but never coached for either team following widespread public backlash.

In 2017, the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced they had him as offensive coordinator, only to quickly rescind the offer. Briles was named Grambling State’s offensive coordinator in 2022, but resigned a few days later.

The IFA, which has as its mission statement “Bridging the gap between professional American football [in the] United States and Mexico”, has scheduled tryout camps for later this month in the Dallas and Miami areas. Former Kentucky head coach Hal Mumme, veteran offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and ex-Washington State coach Nick Rolovich (who was fired in 2021 for refusing to be vaccinated against COVID-19) are also reportedly on-board as IFA head coaches or are expected to soon join the league.
