Arrest made in north Alabama animal cruelty case involving 3 dead dogs

A woman was arrested Tuesday in connection with the north Alabama animal cruelty case involving three dead dogs that caused authorities to seize 32 other dogs at an abandoned home.

Heather Lynne Sheffield was charged with 10 counts of cruelty to animals and is being held in the Lawrence County jail on $3,000 bond, jail records showed.

The incident happened on Friday, when the Lawrence County Sheriff’s office said its patrol division executed a search warrant, along with animal control, at an abandoned residence on County Road 324.

They found the dogs there, along with three dead dogs.

The surviving dogs, which are now being held as evidence, were taken to the Lawrence County Animal Shelter to receive medical care from a local veterinarian. They were characterized as being in poor health.

Sheffield was identified as the previous owner of the abandoned home, according to WAFF, which reported more charges in the case are possible.
