Arrest made in fatal Alexander City community center triple shooting
A teenager has been arrested in connection with a double shooting earlier this month at an Alexander City community center that left another teen dead and another person injured, authorities said Thursday.
Latavian Brownfield, 18, of Sylacauga, was taken into Alexander City police custody Tuesday and charged with murder and assault in the June 9 double shooting at the Benson Community Center, according to Central Alabama CrimeStoppers.
At the community center at 2774 N. Central Avenue, authorities found 19-year-old Jay’z’ion Strong of Goodwater with a gunshot wound around 12:30 a.m. June 9. Strong was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators learned that a fight had broken out in the center’s parking lot earlier in the night. The center’s security guards broke up that fight.
Later, individuals returned with guns, shooting the two victims and multiple vehicles.
“CrimeStoppers would like to acknowledge the outstanding investigative work that ultimately led to an arrest in this fatal shooting,” the organization said in a statement Thursday.
