Armed suspect fatally shot by Opelika police, officials say
An officer-involved shooting early Sunday left one person dead in Opelika.
Opelika police were dispatched at 3:07 a.m. to Century Park Apartments on Century Boulevard to a report of a suspicious incident.
The responding officer encountered a person who was armed with a gun, police officials said. There was an altercation, and shots were fired by the officer.
Medical aid was rendered at the scene, but the person was pronounced dead. He or she has not yet been identified.
The officer was not injured.
The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the probe, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
Once the investigation is complete, the evidence will be presented to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office for review.
