Arkansas AD apologizes for staffer’s ‘interaction’ with student reporter at SEC tournament

Arkansas’ Hunter Yurachek released a statement Saturday apologizing on behalf of Arkansas basketball support staff member Riley Hall for what the athletic director described as an inadvertent “interaction” after video appears to show Hall grabbing a student reporter’s phone.

On Friday, Arkansas coach Eric Musselman was leaving the court after the Razorback fell 67-61 to No. 18 Texas A&M in the quarterfinal of the SEC men’s basketball tournament.

In the process, Jack Weaver — a reporter for The Kentucky Kernel — claims, Hall grabbed his phone and threw it to the ground as they exited the court.

On Saturday, Yurachek apologized in a statement on behalf of Hall and the program.

“I have visited with Riley Hall, a member of our men’s basketball support staff, and others who personally observed an interaction between Mr. Hall and a reporter following our game Friday night at the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament,” Yurachek’s statement said. “During our conversation, Mr. Hall expressed his regret that while leaving the floor his engagement inadvertently resulted in knocking the reporter’s cell phone from his hand. While, based on our discussion, I do not believe there was malicious intent, I have addressed the issue with Mr. Hall and he agrees his actions were not appropriate or reflective of our program. On behalf of Mr. Hall and our program, I want to offer an apology to the reporter impacted by these actions.”

The Kentucky Kernel, the independent student newspaper at the University of Kentucky, released a statement after the incident.

“The Kentucky Kernel is appalled by the actions of the Arkansas men’s basketball program. … no journalist, especially a student journalist, should be subjected to violence for simply doing their job,” the statement said.
