Arkabutla, Mississippi shootings leave 6 dead; gunman arrested
A series of shootings reportedly left six people dead in the nearly 300-person town of Arkabutla, Miss.
Police arrested a suspect early Friday afternoon following a pursuit ending in the driveway of a home, where one person was found dead in a car and another victim was located in the roadway, news station WREG reported.
The alleged gunman previously shot a man in a store, then killed a woman in a nearby home, officials said.
Two people were found dead in a house on Arkabutla Dam Road, which is where authorities believe the killer lived.
It’s unclear if or how the victims are connected.
Gov. Tate Reeves’ office said he had been briefed on the shootings and a male suspect was in custody.
“At this time, we believe he acted alone,” Reeves said in a statement. “His motive is not yet known.”
An elementary school and a high school in nearby Coldwater both went on lockdown while the suspect was being sought, according to the Coldwater Elementary School Facebook page. A short time later, a second post on the page said the lockdown had been lifted and “all students and staff are safe.”
Arkabutla is located in northwest Mississippi, roughly 40 minutes south of Memphis, Tenn. It’s the birthplace of award-winning actor James Earl Jones.
