Argument inside Birmingham apartment leaves 1 dead, 1 in custody

An argument inside a northeast Birmingham apartment left one person dead, and another in custody.

Police were dispatched at 8:57 a.m. Sunday to a report of a person shot in the 2300 block of Seventh Way N.W. at Madison Park apartments.

They arrived to find the victim – an adult male – unresponsive on the sidewalk in front of the apartment building.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service took him to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said the victim and the suspect were involved in a verbal dispute inside one of the units. Shots were then fired, hitting the victim.

The victim ran outside of the apartment and collapsed.

The suspect was taken into custody.

The man’s death is Birmingham’s 22nd homicide this year. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have 29 homicides, including the 22 in Birmingham.
