Argument between 2 east Alabama brothers leaves 1 dead

An argument between two brothers in east Alabama left one of them dead.

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver on Wednesday identified the slain man as Billy Mitchell. He was 47 and lived in Gaylesville.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon inside a vehicle on Highway 35 near Watson’s Crossroads.

Shaver said it appears the driver of the vehicle was under attack when he shot Mitchell, who was his brother.

No charges have been filed.

The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and the case will later be presented to a Cherokee County grand jury.

The JSU Center For Applied Forensics at Jacksonville State University, the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are assisting in the probe.
