Area tournament roundup: Hazel Green girls start title defense with rout

Class 6A girls defending champion Hazel Green began its quest for a seventh straight title with a 95-29 win over Mae Jemison in Area 16 first round tournament action on Friday.

Area tournament play started on Friday and girls action will be completed by Wednesday while boys finish on Thursday. The winner and runner-up in each area, Class 1A-6A, play sub-regional games against a predetermined area while Class 7A teams advance straight to regionals. Sub-regionals for girls is Friday while boys play on Saturday.

Kristen Johnson led top-ranked Hazel Green (25-4) with 18 points, converting 8-of-10 field goals, and adding 2 steals. Reagan Baeder scored 15 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

Addison Cantrell had 13 points and 5 rebounds, Sydney Steward had 13 points and 3 steals and Zamiah Garth added 12 points and 4 rebounds.

Amaya Wells and Jasmine Ervin each scored 10 points for Mae Jemison.

Hazel Green plays Lee-Huntsville on Monday at 6 p.m. for the area title. The winner hosts Area 14 runner-up while the loser travels to Area 14 winner.

Lee-Huntsville 57, Buckhorn 46

Lee overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to secure the Class 6A, Area 16 victory as Jayla Turner scored 15 points to lead the Generals (17-12).

Morgan Pride added 12 points, London Harris scored 10 points, Limaya Batimba had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Khaleyah Jones scored 9 points.

Kayla Childress led Buckhorn with 15 points while Jasmine Montague added 11 points.

BOYS

CLASS 2A

Decatur Heritage 70, West End 31

Decatur Heritage sprinted to a 15 point first quarter lead and cruised to the Area 13 win on Friday, Nash Thomas leading the charge with 31 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

Brady Wilson had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals and Hayden Page added 7 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

Conner Walker scored 12 points for West End while Marty Wooten had 8 points.

Decatur Heritage plays Holly Pond on Monday for the area title.

AISA

Valiant Cross 54, Springwood 53

Deshawn Hall nailed a 3-point basket as time expired to give the third-ranked Warriors the victory over second-ranked Springwood in AISA AAA action on Friday.

Hall led Valiant Cross (21-5) with 22 points, 17 rebounds, 4 blocks and 4 steals while Jordan Archie scored 12 points and Letwan Hall had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

REGULAR SEASON

Theodore 56, BC Rain 44

Jacoby Dubose scored 15 points, all 3-pointers, while Travis Davis scored 10 points to lead the Bobcats (18-11).
