Are you eligible for money from the Kia, Hyundai theft settlement?
Kia and Hyundai car owners whose vehicles were stolen will soon be able to claim their piece of a $145 million settlement.
According to USA Today, the law firm Hagens Berman announced that anyone who bought or leased a Kia or Hyundai model between 2011 and 2022 and had it stolen should receive a notice about the settlement this month.
The lawsuit stems from claims that Hyundai and Kia let their vehicles become more susceptible to theft by not installing immobilizers in these models.
The suit is expected to cover about 9 million vehicles, reports USA Today.
According to PennLive.com, the court still has to grant final approval of the $145 million settlement before payments can be sent out. That hearing is scheduled for July 15.
The deadline to submit a claim is Jan. 11, 2025, the law firm said. To submit a claim, you must be registered as the owner or lessor of the vehicle. It doesn’t matter if you bought the car from a dealership or a private individual.
Last year, the city of Birmingham police gave away free anti-theft steering wheel locks as thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in the city and nationwide. In 2023, there were more than 300 thefts reported for Hyundai and Kia vehicles.
