Are Social Security recipients getting an extra $600 stimulus this month?

Did you hear Social Security recipients are getting a $600 stimulus payment this month? Well, at least according to social media and some news reports.

It’s not true, of course.

Fake stories online claim an extra $600 Social Security benefit payment will be issued in June. The rumor spread so quickly that the Social Security Administration said it received 463,000 calls on June 3 – roughly 140,000 more than normal – questioning the supposed payment.

The message from the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General is blunt: “Any information regarding a current $600 increase is false and should be ignored.”

“Please be aware and don’t fall for this stunt,” Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley said. “We are alerting the public to these falsehoods, and we are addressing these bogus claims at the source.”

The next increase in Social Security benefits will come in January 2025, with the annual cost of living adjustment. 2025′s figure won’t be announced until October.

“The annual cost-of-living increases issued by SSA are always automatic. No additional information is required for you to receive the legitimate COLA increase,” Inspector General Gail S. Ennis said in a statement. “Safeguard your personal information as these reports of misinformation are often scam-related attempts to steal your identity, or your money, or both.”
