Apple Wallet digital driver’s license and state ID program expands to more states
At least 16 states are going digital with driver’s licenses.
iPhone and Apple Watch users can present digital identification with Apple Wallet using an authenticated Face ID or touch ID. These IDs are encrypted when stored. However, the locations of where the IDs are used isn’t stored.
“While digital IDs do not replace physical driver’s licenses or state IDs, they provide a convenient alternative for situations where a mobile ID is accepted,” according to a news story by PC Outlet.
With digital identification, only necessary data is shared. For example, if someone needs to verify age to buy alcohol, the ID will only show the age, not the full ID number and address.
Alabama isn’t one of the where these digital IDs can be used. Government officials are encouraging Alabamians to get the STAR ID by May 7.
California has developed its own digital ID system specifically for its drivers that links to the DMV.
New York is already implementing digital IDs, and New Jersey may soon follow.

- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Iowa
