Apple named in $95 million class action accusing Siri of spying on users: What to know

If you’ve owned an Apple device in the last ten years, you may be eligible to receive part of a $95 million settlement from the company.

A class action lawsuit, Lopez v. Apple, was filed in a California federal court in 2021, on behalf of Apple users whose confidential or private communications “were allegedly obtained by Apple and/or shared with third parties as a result of an unintended Siri activation,” according to the lawsuit’s webpage.

These users allege that they received targeted ads based on conversations they had during phone calls recorded by Siri without their permission, according to court documents.

Apple denies all of the allegations made in the lawsuit and denies that the company did anything improper or unlawful, the webpage adds.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for part of the settlement, current or previous Apple users must submit a valid claim form and swear under oath that they experienced an unintended Siri activation while having a private conversation.

The deadline to submit is July 2, 2025.

How much can they receive?

Claimants can receive up to $20 a device for up to five devices, capping the total possible settlement payout at $100 per person, according to the suit webpage.

When will they receive payment?

The court will hold a hearing on August 1, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. (the “final approval hearing”), to decide whether to approve the settlement, according to the webpage.

The court may move the final approval hearing to a different date or time without providing further notice to the class, it adds.

Claimants can find the date and time of the final approval hearing on the suit website.

“If the settlement is approved, there may be appeals,” it reads.

“The appeal process can take time. If there is no appeal, your settlement benefit will be processed promptly. Please be patient.”

Updates regarding the settlement and when payments will be made will be posted on the suit website.
