Anquin Barnes enters transfer portal; 4th Alabama player to do so, per reports
A fourth current Alabama football player has plans to enter the transfer portal. Defensive lineman Anquin Barnes Jr. has reportedly opted to explore other programs, according to multiple reports on Monday afternoon.
Barnes, a native of Montgomery, appeared in two games this season: Week 1 against Middle Tennessee and the last non-conference game of the regular season against Chattanooga. He’s the second defensive lineman to enter the portal, along with Isaiah Hastings. 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer were the first to report Barnes’ plans.
None of Alabama’s transfers have chosen a new school. The window to enter the portal closes five days after Alabama’s run in the College Football Playoff ends. The Tide is set for a College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl against Michigan on Jan. 1.
Barnes was an offensive and defensive lineman at Percy Julian Phoenix High, then called Robert E. Lee High, and was a four-star recruit. He was the No. 16 player in the state’s class of 2021 and held offers from Auburn, Florida and other SEC schools. Barnes did not record a tackle across his two appearances in three years with the Tide.
Tyler Buchner was the first player to enter the portal on Dec. 4, a day after the Tide made the CFP. He is reportedly staying with the program through the season before playing lacrosse at Notre Dame. Hastings and wide receivers Thaiu Jones-Bell (who left the team in the preseason) and Ja’Corey Brooks followed.
Alabama is expected to return scholarship players Jaheim Oatis, Tim Keenan III, James Smith, Damon Payne Jr., Jah-Marien Latham, Monkell Goodwine, Edric Hill, Jordan Reenaud and Hunter Osborne to its defensive line. It also has two defensive line prospects coming in, Parker four-star Jeremiah Beaman and Central-Phenix City’s Isaia Faga.
