Another star Alabama high school running back is reclassifying

Jackson star running back Ezavier “EJ” Crowell is the latest Alabama high school football standout to announce he is reclassifying.

Crowell, a 17-year-old sophomore, will reclassify from 2027 to the Class of 2026, he announced Tuesday. Jackson High coach Cody Flournoy confirmed the move to AL.com.

“It’s a conversation we’ve had with him for a while,” Flournoy said. “He was great as a freshman and had another breakout year this season. He’s a really good kid, a solid, humble kid. I told him, ‘I would love for you to stay two more years, but with NIL out there now, that is real money.’ He needs to do what is best for him and his family.”

The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Crowell is now the No. 6 junior recruit in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings, and the No. 7 running back in the nation. His offers include Alabama, Texas, Auburn, Colorado, Georgia and multiple other schools.

“He’s a once-in-a-generation back,” Flournoy said.

Crowell, one of three finalists for Class 4A Back of the Year, rushed for 1,964 yards and 31 touchdowns on 168 carries in 2024 in helping the Aggies to the state title.

Earlier this year, Auburn High RB Omar Mabson reclassified into the current class of 2025.

Last year, Saraland’s Ryan Williams famously reclassified into the Class of 2024 and was a standout for Alabama this year.

Crowell also is one of two finalists to be named AL.com Player of the Year in fan voting. The winner will be announced Wednesday.
