Another chance for severe storms later this week

Several rounds of storms are in the forecast for at least part of Alabama this week.

And a lot of rain — possibly up to 6 inches for some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

The better chance for storms in Alabama will arrive on Wednesday afternoon and could last into Wednesday night.

A tornado, damaging winds and heavy rain will all be possible, mainly for areas in south and west Alabama.

Here is the Storm Prediction Center’s severe weather outlook for Wednesday:

However, isolated severe storms could also affect parts of north and west Alabama on Monday. The SPC has added a Level 1 out of 5 (or marginal) risk for those areas to its Monday severe weather outlook:

A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.

More of the state will be affected by rain, which could be heavy at times and could flood the usual flood-prone areas.

The National Weather Service is forecasting 4-6 inches of rain for parts of south and south-central Alabama in the window from Tuesday night until Thursday morning.

Some of the cities forecast to see more rain include Mobile, Selma, Troy, Evergreen, Auburn and Alexander City. North Alabama is forecast to receive less than that but could also get 2-3 inches before it’s over, according to forecasters.

However, the weather service cautioned that those areas at risk for the highest totals could change. Forecasters will be tracking a warm front that is expected to lift northward across southern Alabama on Wednesday. Areas along the front could be in line to get the most rain.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center has most of Alabama included in a risk for flash flooding from Wednesday into Thursday:

The threat for storms is expected to end by Thursday, but some light rain could linger in parts of the state as the storm system departs to the north and east.

But there is good news: Things are looking drier and sunnier for next weekend, according to forecasters.
