Another âsuper fogâ pileup on Interstate 10 near New Orleans kills 1, injures 8
One man was killed and eight other people injured in another “super fog”-related pileup involving an 18-wheeler and several other vehicles, this time on Interstate 10 near Irish Bayou just east of New Orleans Tuesday morning.
NOLA.com reports all lanes of I-10 were closed for about six hours Tuesday as crews worked to clear the roadway, which occurred just about 4:30 a.m. I-10 east reopened about 11 a.m., but I-10 west remained closed for another two hours while the 18-wheeler was removed from the roadway. Westbound drivers diverted at Irish Bayou.
Drivers near Irish Bayou encountered a dangerous mixture of smoke from dry wetlands fires and fog, a condition called “super fog,” similar to that which occurred on Interstate 55 near Manchac, La., last month, resulting in a series of accidents involving 168 vehicles — killing seven people and injuring dozens more.
NOLA.com reported that super fog was building again Tuesday in that same area of I-55.
