Anders Carlson: ‘We were hoping to get another kick’

Rookie Anders Carlson had missed six field-goal attempts and six extra-point kicks entering the Green Bay Packers’ NFC playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night.

After each of those misses, the former Auburn standout had made his next kick.

But after Carlson missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt with 6:18 to play against San Francisco, he didn’t get another opportunity.

The 49ers responded to the miss with a 12-play, 69-yard drive capped by running back Christian McCaffrey’s 6-yard touchdown run with 67 seconds to play. San Francisco took a 24-21 lead instead of tying the game.

An interception with 34 seconds left sealed the victory and advanced the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game.

“There was still some time, so we were hoping to get another kick,” Carlson said. “Obviously, it didn’t pan out like the way we wanted it to. But after each kick, just staying ready for the next one. It’s tough that there wasn’t another one.”

During the week, Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur was asked if the Packers had considered replacing Carlson in the postseason after he missed an extra point in the 48-32 first-round victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

“We’re committed to him,” LaFleur said then, “and we’re going to see this thing through with him.”

After Saturday night’s game, LaFleur said: “You just got to be resilient. You got to find a way to get more consistent. Like I said, like I talked about, I think a lot of young kickers in this league go through some growing pains, and, unfortunately, it will get magnified because of the magnitude of this game and the spot when it happened. And that’s just part of it. But you got to be tough-minded, you got to be resilient, you got to be willing to work and find ways to get better.”

Carlson had made two 29-yard field goals and an extra-point kick before missing from 41 yards out, with the football slipping just outside the left upright.

“Each kick is its own story,” Carlson said. “Just trying to make the best story out of each one, but, yeah, I think they’ve been inconsistent. …

“There’s a lot to learn, and for me, it’s tough to see these guys because I know how much work they put in, and I just want to put them in the best position as possible, so just thinking about them and working for them.”

Carlson made 27-of-33 field-goal attempts and 34-of-39 extra-point kicks during the regular season. He went 6-of-7 on PATs in the playoff victory against Dallas.

“I think if we had the answer, we would have fixed it, right?” LaFleur said about Carlson’s performance. “So certainly just got to work on the consistency. We’ve seen him do it. We know that he’s capable. But you got to be consistent in order to last in this league.”

LaFleur didn’t blame the defeat on the missed field-goal attempt.

“It’s never one play,” LaFleur said. “I’m sure a lot of it’s going to come down to the missed field goal, but there were plenty of opportunities. You can go back in the first half and have three red-zone opportunities and have six points. There were a lot of plays out there. If one play goes different, we probably have a different result right now.”
