CLASS 4A

Key players: Cherokee County – Jacob Cornejo has unofficially run for 2,895 yards and 37 touchdowns this season. His yardage total ranks ninth in AHSAA history for a single season. He ran for 148 yards and three TDs on 22 carries against Westminster Christian last week; the Warriors led 43-0 at halftime. Cornejo also plays linebacker. … Despite playing with a torn ACL against Westminster, quarterback Carson Tittle completed all three of his pass attempts for 110 yards and two touchdowns, both to Ben Frampton. … Defensive end Tae Diamond leads the team in tackles and sacks, while safety Jace Turner spearheads the secondary.
Montgomery Catholic – Troy commitment Caleb McCreary has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 1,539 yards and 17 touchdowns with four picks. He has rushed for 965 yards and 21 TDs … Josh Griffin has run for 1,742 yards and 24 touchdowns while averaging 12 yards per carry. … J.J. Williams has caught 27 passes and two touchdowns; Jotavion Pierce and Courtney Williams have four TD catches apiece…. Defensive leaders include Miles Khatri (123 tackles), Keltric Washington (24 tackles for a loss), Garrett Sanford (23 tackles for a loss), Rickie Williams (14 passes defended), and Jayden Phifer (four interceptions).
The skinny: Montgomery Catholic has the No. 1 scoring defense (5.2 points per game) among all AHSAA classifications; Cherokee County counters with Class 4A’s No. 2 scoring offense (43.3). The Knights average 41.4 points, and the Warriors allow 11.1. … Montgomery Catholic is seeking its first state championship; the Knights lost to Fyffe in the 2020 3A title game. … Cherokee County was the state runner-up last season. The Warriors won the 4A state title in 2009. … Cherokee County’s lone loss this season was to Class 6A Fort Payne in the regular season finale. …This is the first meeting between Cherokee County and Montgomery Catholic.

Williams averages 11.8 yards per carry and has totaled 1,456 yards and 22 TDs. … Cherry scored the winning TD in the final minute of the Mustangs’ last two victories: from 11 yards out with 57 seconds left against Geraldine and from 4 yards out with 19 seconds left against Sylvania. … Jake Poldiak has completed 79.6 percent of his passes for 2,336 yards and 22 touchdowns with three interceptions. … Jackson Reece has caught 83 passes for 1,334 yards and 12 TDs. Junior linebacker AJ Rice, a Mississippi State commitment, recorded 18 tackles last week.
Mobile Christian – Damien Gatson, a South Alabama baseball commit, has completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 2,335 yards and 22 touchdowns with four interceptions. He was held to 35 yards passing and an interception against St. James, but he ran for 85 yards and a pair of TDs. … PJ Brown has rushed for 1,783 yards and 22 TDs. … MJ Moore has 52 catches for 986 yards and nine touchdowns. He also returned two punts for TDs. On defense, he has six interceptions. … Kentonio Kelly averages 13.9 tackles per game; he has 17 tackles for a loss and four interceptions. … Floyd-Dawens Boucard has 25 tackles for a loss, including 10 sacks, three of which came last week. … Carter Lewis made seven of eight field goals with a long kick of 48 yards; he has made 76 of 77 extra-point attempts.
The skinny: Madison Academy pits its Class 3A top-ranked offense (49.4 points per game) against Mobile Christian’s top-ranked defense (8.9). The Leopards average 41.9 points, and the Mustangs allow 13.7. … Madison Academy has scored 691 points, second in program history to the 722 scored by the 2014 state championship team. … The Mustangs also won 3A state titles in 2013 and 2012 and were state runner-up in 2016 (4A) and 2011 (3A). … Mobile Christian set program records for points scored (587) and wins in a season. … The Leopards were state runner-up in 2019 and 2016; they have not won a state championship since joining the AHSAA in 2006. The skinny: Defending Class 2A state champ Fyffe is ranked third in Class 2A in both scoring offense (46.3) and scoring defense (11.4), while Reeltown is fourth in each category at 42.6 and 12.9, respectively. … In addition to last season, the Red Devils won titles in 2020, 2019 (56-7 over Reeltown), 2018, 2016 and 2014 and were runner-up in 2015 and 2007. Each of those championship game appearances came under Benefield, whose 350 victories rank third in state history behind UMS-Wright’s Terry Curtis (355) and Central-Clay County’s Danny Horn (351). … Fyffe’s loss was to Class 3A semifinalist Geraldine to open the season. … Reeltown won state titles in 2009, 2001 and 1987 and finished second in 2019, 2010, 2000, 1992,1991 and 1984. … The Rebels’ 554 points this season set a program record, surpassing the 514 of the 2019 team. … Fyffe also beat Reeltown 34-0 in the second round of the 2014 playoffs.

The skinny: Leroy is the defending state champion. The Bears also won titles in 2010, 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2004, and they were runner-up in 2017 and 2001. … Leroy has won 19 consecutive games. … The Bears were ranked No. 1 the entire season by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Leroy and Saraland (6A) were the only two teams ranked No 1 in the preseason that finished the regular season atop their classification. … This matchup pits two of the top defenses in Class 2A: Coosa Christian allows just 5.4 points, least in 2A and second-lowest among all AHSAA teams; Leroy allows 10.5, fourth-lowest in 2A. The Conquerors average 41.4 points, and the Bears average 38.1. … Coosa Christian lost only one game on the field – 26-0 to class 3A semifinalist Geraldine in the season opener.
