An East Alabama restaurant has a different way of giving holiday bonuses
A restaurant that sits on the shores of Weiss Lake in Cherokee County is once again handing out holiday bonuses to its more than 30 employees – in a distinctly different way.
Decks & Docks in Leesburg on Wednesday, Dec. 13, will designate all the day’s sales to be split equally among the employees, according to owner Abigail Yates. That includes T-shirt and gift card sales.
The restaurant, which serves up burgers, sandwiches, wings, catfish and drinks, began the practice in 2020 following the COVID lockdown, when employees spent part of the year filling to-go orders and felt the economic effects of the pandemic.
Yates, the store’s owner since August, said the previous owner William Barnwell came up with the idea as a way to get the employees extra cash.
“It’s split evenly between all our employees,” Yates said. “Anything spent in-house that day will go toward the employees. It’s gotten bigger every year since we started it. Every year it’s exceeded my expectations.”
The seasonal restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday.
