Amtrak to announce fares, start date for Gulf Coast route Tuesday
Amtrak’s long-awaited announcement for the start date, schedules and fare prices of the restarted Gulf Coast route will take place on Tuesday.
The national passenger rail operator will begin its five-city press tour at 8 a.m. in Mobile at Government Plaza.
Amtrak’s announcements will include a start date for the full service of the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service, a twice-daily intercity passenger route connecting New Orleans to Mobile. The route includes five stops in coastal Mississippi — Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis. The train’s name, after the festive annual pre-Lenten holiday, was released in April.
Amtrak Vice president Nicole Bucich will attend each event and provide schedule and fare information. She will also recognize the years of work it has taken to get the new service going.
Also in attendance will be Knox Ross, chairman of the Southern Rail Commission; mayors and other local officials and tourism leaders.
The schedule includes news conferences at 9:45 a.m. in Pascagoula, 11 a.m. in Biloxi, noon in Gulfport, 1:15 p.m. in Bay St. Louis and 3 p.m. at Union Passenger Terminal in downtown New Orleans.
