America’s oldest craft brewery gets second chance under new owner

A change in ownership could give new life to America’s oldest craft brewer.

Anchor Brewing closed last year after more than 127 years in business. This week, however, Hamdi Ulukaya, billionaire founder and CEO of yogurt maker Chobani, announced he had purchased the San Francisco-based beer brand, CNN reported.

“I was…touched by Anchor’s devoted employees who have worked tirelessly to make it one of the most beloved beer brands in San Francisco and around the world. I will honor Anchor’s history, and I offer my commitment to its future,” Ulukaya wrote on LinkedIn.

Anchor closed in July 2023 after years of declining sales. Previous owners Sapporo USA originally planned to auction off Anchor’s real estate and intellectual property separately but Ulukaya purchased it all in order to keep the company intact.
