American Airlines grounds all flights nationwide on Christmas Eve

American Airlines has grounded all flights nationwide on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

“We’re currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights. Your safety is our utmost priority, once this is rectified, we’ll have you safely on your way to your destination,” the company posted on social media.

The airline wrote in a statement to ABC News: “Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

The delay comes during what was expected to be another record for holiday travel in the U.S.

Trade group Airlines for America also foresees record travel, saying it expected U.S. airlines to carry 54 million passengers during a 19-day period that started Thursday and ends Monday, Jan. 6. The number would represent a 6% increase over last year.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
