Amari Cooper wins NFL award for record-breaking game

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper is the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 16 of the 2023 NFL season.

During a 36-22 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday, Cooper had 11 receptions for 265 yards and two touchdowns. The former Alabama All-American had a 53-yard reception on the first snap of the game, caught touchdown passes of 75 and 7 yards and scored a 2-point conversion.

Cooper broke the franchise single-game record for receiving yards as he became the first Cleveland player to post back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

In the 18th game in NFL history in which a player collected at least 265 receiving yards, Cooper became the fourth player with at least three career games with a minimum of 200 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions, joining another former Alabama star, Don Hutson, who had four, and Charlie Hennigan and former West Alabama standout Tyreek Hill with three apiece.

Cooper also won a Player of the Week Award after his previous two such games. He had 11 receptions for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the Oakland Raiders’ 31-30 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 19, 2017, and 10 receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns in the Dallas Cowboys’ 29-23 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 9, 2018.

Cooper became the first wide receiver to win the Offensive Player of the Week Award with three teams, and with four total awards, he equaled Julio Jones for the most weekly honors by a former Alabama wide receiver.

Announced by the NFL on Wednesday, the other Player of the Week Award winners for Week 16 included Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, NFC Offensive; Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton, AFC Defensive; Detroit Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, NFC Defensive; Miami Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders, AFC Special Teams; and Atlanta Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo, NFC Special Teams.

Four other players from Alabama high schools and colleges have won one of the NFL’s weekly awards this season. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 1, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (Alabama) was the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 8, Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker Josh Allen (Abbeville) was the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 12 and Los Angeles Chargers punter JK Scott (Alabama) was the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 13.
